Easy Homemade Tacos

INGREDIENTS:

For the Taco Filling:

1 lb (450g) ground beef (or your choice of protein)

1 medium onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon chili powder

1 teaspoon cumin

1 teaspoon paprika (smoked paprika adds a nice touch)

1/2 teaspoon oregano

Salt and pepper to taste

1/2 cup tomato sauce or salsa

1/2 cup water

For Serving:

8-10 taco shells (hard or soft according to preference)

Shredded lettuce

Diced tomatoes

Shredded cheese (cheddar, Monterey Jack, or a blend)

Sour cream

Guacamole or diced avocados

Fresh cilantro, chopped (optional)

Lime wedges (optional)

Sliced jalapeños (optional for extra heat)

DIRECTIONS:

Preparing the Taco Filling:

Cook the Meat: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spoon, until it’s no longer pink. Drain any excess fat.

Add Aromatics: Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the beef. Cook until the onions are soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.

Season: Sprinkle the chili powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper over the meat mixture. Stir well to evenly coat the meat with the spices.

Simmer: Add the tomato sauce and water to the skillet. Stir well to combine. Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 10-15 minutes, or until most of the liquid has evaporated and the mixture is thick. Adjust seasoning to taste.

Assembling the Tacos:

Prepare Taco Shells: If using hard shells, warm them in the oven according to the package instructions. For soft tortillas, you can warm them in a dry skillet over medium heat for about 30 seconds on each side or wrap them in a damp cloth and microwave for about 20 seconds.

Fill Tacos: Spoon the beef filling into the taco shells. Start with a modest amount to ensure you have enough room for your toppings.

Add Toppings: Top the beef with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded cheese, and any other toppings you like. A dollop of sour cream and some guacamole or diced avocado add creaminess. Sprinkle with fresh cilantro and squeeze lime juice over the top for extra freshness.

Serve: Serve the tacos immediately, accompanied by lime wedges and sliced jalapeños for those who like it spicy.
