CLASSIC PATTY MELT
INGREDIENTS:
1 lb ground beef
Salt and pepper to taste
4 slices of rye bread
4 slices of Swiss cheese
1 large onion, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato, pickles, mayonnaise, mustard
DIRECTIONS:
Divide the ground beef into four equal portions and shape each portion into a patty. Season both sides of the patties generously with salt and pepper.
Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and add the vegetable oil.
Add the burger patties to the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
In the same skillet, add the butter and sliced onions. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes.
Meanwhile, preheat another skillet or griddle over medium heat and lightly butter one side of each slice of rye bread.
Place two slices of bread, buttered side down, on the skillet. Top each slice with a slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked burger patty, and a generous spoonful of caramelized onions.
Place the remaining slices of bread on top, buttered side facing up.
Cook the sandwiches for 2-3 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
Remove from the skillet and serve immediately, with your choice of optional toppings.
